We specialize in hunting mature whitetail bucks - probably the smartest and toughest big game animal to hunt in North America. In our experience over many years, the best opportunities come from stand hunting. Typically this type of deer hunting provides the hunter with a shot at a stationary target from a good solid rest. We use three types of stands; ladder stands, climbers and ground blinds.
We set our stands up on travel corridors or scrape lines in the thick brush away from the field edges. Hunters may be expected to stay in the stand for the entire day, thus cold weather gear is mandatory. Temperatures usually hover around 0 degrees F. but some years it gets even colder and snow is usually present. Your guide will take you into the stand in the morning and then pick you up again in the evening. Since we are hunting during the rut, these mature Whitetail bucks are moving about all day long. Since they are very wary, they prefer to stay within the thickest travel corridors in their pursuit of a doe.
Rattling and calling work exceptional well in our area so sure you bring your rattling horns, grunt tubes and doe bleats. Call throughout the entire day - but sparingly as every hour or so is plenty.
Hunters should be prepared for shots at up to 300 yards and we recommend you sight your rifle in for 200 but also know where it hits at 300. Most our bucks are shot at between 100 and 200 yards but you should be prepared for that buck of a lifetime if he presents himself at a longer range.
Recommended calibers are .270 or larger, just keep in mind that deer are thin skinned animals and the lighter weight bullets usually expand better thus providing the quicker and cleaner kills that we all prefer.
